Subject: Considering teaching in South Korea - Need your advice/help

Hi,

My name is B and I'm considering teaching ESL in South Korea. I'm a Black woman and a little apprehensive about the experience. I'm really excited about the potential opportunity but I just have some questions - to further complicate things, I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter that I just couldn't fathom the idea of leaving behind. If you could please provide some insight on your experiences in Korea, I would greatly appreciate it.

A few questions I do have are:

- Was it difficult for you to secure a teaching position because you're Black?
- Do you know anyone who is teaching with their child/children?
- Is there a Hispanic population in S. Korea? (My daughter is of a multi-ethnic background - Nigerian/African-American/Salvadoran/Peruvian)

I don't want to bombard you with a load of questions but if we could start with these, I would be really grateful. Please let me know if you know of any agencies that have placed or are willing to place teachers that want to bring their children with. Thank you so much for your assistance in advance and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Blessings, B

If you could please provide some insight on your experiences in Korea, I would greatly appreciate it. sure. if you have specific questions, i'll answer as best i can. people often ask me, "tell me about your experience," i never know how to answer, its a very broad question.

on facebook, look for XXX

- Was it difficult for you to secure a teaching position because you're Black? no.
- Is there a Hispanic population in S. Korea? (My daughter is of a multi-ethnic background - Nigerian/African-American/Salvadoran/Peruvian) i know of two facebook groups, Spanish Speakers in Seoul, and Hispanic People in Korea. i dont konw how active they are or what they do, but perhaps you can message them and ask about their experiences.

Please let me know if you know of any agencies that have placed or are willing to place teachers that want to bring their children with. i dont know of any that specifically say they would do that, but i dont konw why any wouldnt do it. just tell them right off that you have a daughter. recruiters are the same: they help to find a job, just a middle man. so long as they dont ask you for money, you'll be alright (they are paid by the school, so they wont collect any fees from you). http://theblackeslteacher.blogspot.com/2001/01/is-it-easy-to-get-job.html

a google group for moms with babies and toddlers. Maybe they can connect people to others with older kids?
